As a Chiropractor, people come to me for pain. "It hurts here, make it go away." It is humorous to me that people will have experienced chronic pain for years, visit numbers of doctors, take any variety of medications and still pain remains; then they come to us and expect it to be "fixed" in a single visit. It just doesn't work that way.
Chiropractic works with the physical alignment and tone of the neuromusculoskeletal systems. We address our diagnosis and treatments to nervous system dysfunction, muscular imbalances and skeletal misalignments. It's amazing what the body can do when balanced in these areas. Most of the time, this is enough to begin to alleviate symptoms and return the body to optimum functioning without medicating. However, sometimes the pain won't go away completely. It may not be as severe, but it's still there. Then what?
Then we need to look at other systems. While I will often discuss nutrition (because it is crucial to perfect health), I would like to open you to a "new" type of medicine: Energy Medicine. Energy medicine is in fact an ancient form of healing, but we are just beginning to recognize how we can use it to "heal" the body.
We are made of energy. Deep within the tissues and cells that make up our physical form we find molecules and atoms. Within those atoms are electrons, neutrons, and neutrons. But quantum science is showing us that even with these structures at our deepest sense of being we are in fact nothing but energy. The rate and size of the movement of that energy determines every physical characteristic we see. That being said about the physical, we have layers of energetic fields around us as well. They too can be measured and traditionally we call them mental, emotional and etheric fields. In energy medicine we are able to facilitate the "healing" process by working with some of these fields and re-balancing the energies of the body.
The mental field is what you think. What types of thoughts dominate your day? Do you even notice them? Most of us do not, we go through the day noticing very few of our thoughts. Many people constantly have negative, judgmental, self-destructive thoughts running through their heads. This leads to dis-ease, an imbalance in the body (think of how your body feels when stressed out). Working with this field, these thoughts can help "heal" the body. The first step is to notice your thoughts, pay attention to them and then begin to make them more positive. Easier said than done, but we can help you with that.
The emotional field is how you feel. We seem to have learned to shut down our emotions, no one wants to see you cry, for instance. So, sometimes we are given pain as a reminder to feel and/or to notice the feeling we are trying to keep tucked deep inside. As physical beings, we are designed to feel. So notice what you feel inside. Ask yourself throughout the day, "what am I feeling?", "where do I feel it?", "what does it feel like?". These will begin to open you up to what you are going through during your day. Again, noticing is the first step.
Pain is an excess of energy in the body. Like a dam building up water by blocking the flow of the river, your pain is a boulder in that dam blocking the flow of energy. And it builds up until you do something about it. Notice it, love that it is there and then do something good for it!
You can worry yourself sick. That's the mental body. You can die of a broken heart. That's the emotional body. But you don't have to! You get to choose how to "heal" it.
So, what's that pain for really?
FYI... through energy work we have helped many patients finally move through that nagging pain and into a wonderful life experience. Namaste.
